Strawberry shortcake… with a twist!

Ok, it’s not a recipe twist.

Strawberry shortcake speaks for itself- especially with in-season Kentucky strawberries. The first berries are starting to filter in to your Lexington Farmers’ market and everyone is very excited.

What we have for you today is a nifty way to serve strawberry shortcake, whether you’re having a party or simply want a lovely way to serve shortcake to your family.

Traditional trifles are large, layered desserts that you can make in a variety of flavors. They often feature thick layers of fluffy cream, which is why making strawberry shortcake trifles works out perfectly. Mini trifles make this dessert feel more manageable, and allow for each person to have their own charming serving.

What you’ll need:
(For a complete guided recipe, check out the link below)

Cake or biscuits for the shortcake layer
Strawberries
Cream or vanilla ice cream
Several small jars or drink glasses

Directions:
Start the layering with the cake, cut into a circle so that it fits snugly into the bottom of the glass or jar. On top of this, add a generous heap of strawberries, followed by the cream. Repeat until the layers have reached the top of each jar or glass. Consider having the top layer overflowing (but not spilling) just a bit (for drama!). If you’d like, garnish with a strawberry and a sprig of mint.

These are best served promptly, though the cake can be made ahead of time.
